How To Proactively Protect Your V8 Engine

It’s certainly true that engines have come a long way since then. But, the fundamentals remain the same, as does the need to look after your engine. 

Of course, most people don’t spend much time thinking about their engines, they simply drive where they need to go. Then, when it makes a strange noise it’s time to get it looked at. However, it doesn’t have o be that way! You can be proactive about looking after your V8 engine.

Oil Changes

Oil is the lifeblood of any engine. It lubricates all the moving parts, preventing damage while the vehicle is in motion. However, while it moves around the engine it will pick up debris and it will also be less effective at looking after the inside of your engine.

It’s best to change oil every 5,000 miles but some vehicles can manage greater distances. You should check your handbook to ensure you know when to change your oil and which oil to use. Change your filter at the same time.

Monitor Cooling

Alongside the oil, your cooling system is probably the most important part of your V8. Keeping the engine cool prevents the block from warping or cracking. Excess heat can also cause damage to internal components and even cause an engine to seize up.

Check Air Filters

Your air filter prevents debris from getting into the engine while ensuring it has enough air to do the job properly. To make sure your V8 engine gets the air it needs, check the filter regularly and keep it clean. Periodically it will need to be replaced.

Keep An Eye Underneath

Most modern vehicles have a tray fitted under the engine that protects it from road debris. You’ll need to decide the best way to check this, either by removing it or by using a torch from above the engine. Your aim is to check for any leaks. 

Leaks are an issue as you’ll be losing oil or water which can cause engine issues. It can also create a variety of hazards. If you see a leak you’ll need to trace it and fix it as soon as possible. 

Check Belts

You’ll see the big belts supporting your V8 engine. It should be possible to visually inspect these and ensure they are in good condition. Cracked, slipping, or worn belts need to be replaced before they break and cause engine problems.
